Welcome to the School of Automation of Wuhan University of Technology!
On the evening of March 31, 2025, the third session of the College's "Craftsmanship Workshop" class was held. Focusing on the ancient intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship of bamboo weaving, this session brought a unique cultural experience to faculty and students, allowing everyone to appreciate the distinctive charm of intangible cultural heritage while handcrafting bamboo weaving wind chimes, and contributing to the inheritance and development of traditional techniques.
As one of China's traditional folk handicrafts, bamboo weaving has a long history, with its earliest prototypes dating back to the Neolithic Age. After thousands of years of inheritance and development, its craftsmanship has become increasingly sophisticated, with diverse weaving techniques widely applied in daily utensils, decorative items, and other fields, carrying the profound cultural heritage of the Chinese nation.
Teacher Zhou, the instructor of the College's Art Troupe, elaborated on the origin, developmental context, and unique artistic style of bamboo weaving for the students. From explaining the weaving of ancient bamboo baskets to showcasing today's exquisite bamboo weaving artworks, the students gained a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of this traditional handicraft. Subsequently, Teacher Zhou demonstrated the production process of bamboo weaving wind chimes on site—from carefully selecting bamboo materials and processing them into hair-thin bamboo threads, to skillfully using weaving techniques such as "picking one strand and pressing one strand" and interlacing to construct the wind chime framework, and finally adding decorative elements. Every step highlighted the ingenuity and delicacy of bamboo weaving techniques, embodying the wisdom passed down through generations of craftsmen.
After the demonstration, the students eagerly began crafting their bamboo weaving wind chimes. They carefully arranged and wove the bamboo threads according to the designed patterns to form the main framework of the wind chimes. In the decoration phase, the students fully unleashed their creativity, adding colorful threads and small bells to the wind chimes, making them not only visually appealing but also capable of emitting clear and melodious sounds when caressed by the breeze.
After hours of effort, uniquely crafted bamboo weaving wind chimes were born in the students' hands. Many students expressed that through making the wind chimes, they deeply appreciated the ingenuity of bamboo weaving artisans and gained a deeper understanding of the cultural value embedded in this ancient technique.
In the future, the College will unswervingly focus on cultural education, continuously explore the diverse values of the "Craftsmanship Workshop" classes, enrich their forms and content, and actively build more educational platforms. This will enable students to hone their patience and concentration through hands-on practice, cultivate innovative thinking and aesthetic capabilities, inject continuous youthful vitality into the promotion of excellent Chinese traditional culture, and help intangible cultural heritage techniques shine more brightly in the new era.
